I don’t remember eating chili much as a kid, so as an adult I found myself thinking that I didn’t like it. Therefore, I would never make it or even order it at a restaurant. Then, several years ago our church held a chili cook-off, in which I was obliged to participate with my small group. I provided a dessert, not chili that year. I went around tasting all the variations of chili other people had made, and I realized that I actually liked quite a few of them, especially the ones that weren’t overly spicy. I’m kind of wimp that way.

I also discovered that I really liked chili that was sweet. And if you know me at all, that should come as no surprise.  I kind of have a sweet tooth. Or maybe a really big sweet tooth, but that’s not the point… Anyway, after the chili cook-off I started trying different chili recipes at home. Over time, I began to like chili more and more, and I eventually came up with the “perfect” chili recipe after being inspired by several other recipes. Okay, maybe it’s not perfect, but I like it a lot, and so does my husband.

I’m sharing my recipe below. It’s simple, sweet, and delicious. If you’re in a pinch for time, you can make it on the stovetop, but if you’re able to plan ahead, I think it tastes better when it spends some time in the crock pot.

I hope you like it as much as we do!

Course Slow Cooker

Passive Time 25 minutes
Servings
Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground turkey or beef, if you prefer
  • 2 cans tri-bean blend kidney, pinto, black
  • 1 cup roasted garlic salsa or your favorite flavor of salsa
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1-2 tablespoons chili seasoning
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
Instructions
  1. Brown ground turkey (or beef) in a saucepan, and drain any excess fat. If you have enough time, transfer your cooked meat to a crock pot and add remaining ingredients. If not, add remaining ingredients to the saucepan after draining fat.
  2. Drain the cans of the tri-bean blend. You don’t have to do a thorough job of this. If some of the liquid is still in the can, that’s fine. Just pour it over your meat.
  3. Add the salsa, crushed tomatoes, chili seasoning, and brown sugar. Give it a good stir, and set it to cook on low for about two hours.
