I happen to love making shredded chicken. On average, I probably make a shredded chicken recipe for dinner almost twice a week. And even though I enjoy cooking, I’m always on the hunt for truly simple recipes that will save me time in the kitchen.
This easy shredded chicken recipe literally takes less than five minutes to throw in my crock pot. It’s unbelievably delicious and insanely easy! We have six people in our family, so it’s rare when I can make a recipe that everyone loves. But this is one of those few family favorites that we eat all the time.
Why I Love This Recipe So Much
With just four ingredients that you can easily keep on hand, this is the perfect back-up recipe for when you don’t have anything planned or when you’re out of everything. It’s also a great weeknight recipe for a busy day when you simply don’t have time to make an elaborate meal. And lastly, it’s an ideal option if you need to make a large batch of shredded chicken for a party or large gathering.
It’s quick, easy, inexpensive, and yummy. See what I mean? This easy shredded chicken recipe is perfect in so many ways! All you need is chicken, olive oil, brown sugar, and a packet of dry Italian dressing.
To make it even easier on you (and if you have a Costco membership), consider buying the individually wrapped frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You never have trim them, and they’re so much easier for clean-up. You simply cut open the bag and dump your chicken in the crock pot.
I have four kids, including 2-year-old twins, so I love to throw this in the crock pot during nap time and have chicken waiting to be shredded at dinner time. Whether it’s summer time and we’re coming home from the pool or park, or if it’s winter time and we’re coming home from one of our kid’s activities, it’s so satisfying to come home to warm, delicious chicken.
To top off your easy shredded chicken, throw a steamable bag of green beans in the microwave and pair it with a yummy roll. And just like that, dinner is done!
I hope your family loves this shredded chicken as much as ours – enjoy!

- Spray the inside of your slow cooker with olive oil.
- Place your chicken breasts in the bottom of your slow cooker. Optional: sprinkle some minced onion or onion powder over your chicken breasts.
- In a separate bowl, mix the packet of Italian salad dressing & seasoning mix, the brown sugar, and the olive oil. This will form a very thick, sugary mixture.
- Pour the mixture over the chicken, making sure to cover the chickens entirely. I use a spoon to spread it out, so that it's evenly coated.
- Allow to cook on low for 3-4 hours or high for 2-3 hours. (Adjust cooking time if you know your slow cooker tends to cook faster or slower. I have noticed that 2 hours on high is plenty of time for my slow cooker to cook three medium chicken breasts.
- Shred your chicken, return to slow cooker, and allow to warm through. This shredded chicken tastes great in a sandwich or on its own. Enjoy!
